The upper stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is projected to slam into the moon on August 5, 2026, traveling at an estimated 5,400 mph, which is roughly seven times the speed of sound. This unintentional collision is expected to hit near the Einstein Crater on the moon’s near side, releasing energy equivalent to about 2.8 tons of TNT. The impact will likely carve out a crater between 65 to 100 feet (20 to 30 meters) wide and blast lunar dust and debris up to 60 miles (100 kilometers) into space.
People have actually captured real asteroid impacts on the Moon, including a rare case in 2025 where an amateur astronomer filmed two flashes as they happened. Because these events are so rare and scientifically valuable, streaming the Moon live increases the chance of witnessing and recording something extraordinary like that in real time.
